Literary Institute review

Thank you to all of our visitors and donors to the Muker Literary Institute over the past year.  People have come from 35 English Counties, across Europe and further afield from USA, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

“Fascinating exhibition in the most beautiful village”

“Lovely testimony to the history of the village and especially enjoyed the Silver Band soundtrack”

Thank you to all those that have donated books – this has provided a welcome addition for residents and visitors alike.

In October WiFi was installed in the Institute, with the support of Community First Yorkshire, and provides access to the internet and WiFi calling for visitors making use of the benches on the green and outside of the Institute.

Many people have registered bird sightings within the immediate area – in 2023 over 90 species had been recorded.

In addition to the permanent photo exhibition the plan for 2024 is to expand the exhibition and to provide more information about the history of the village, the different forms of land management and stories from local people.

Muker Domino Drive

Just one week to go to the much anticipated Muker Domino Drive in the Public Hall.

All are welcome to attend, from those that have never played dominoes to the seasoned veterans in the Dale.

Dominoes prizes, a raffle and supper included.

Friday 3rd November 2023 at 7.30pm in the Public Hall.

One week until the 2023 Muker Show

With just one week to go to the Muker Show there is a lot to look forward to with thousands of entries in the various categories for sheep, horticulture, baking, photography and children’s handwriting.

If you are planning to visit Muker the Literary Institute is worth a visit and we would love to receive any book donations – just place them inside the Institute.

In addition, Swaledale Woollens and The Old School Gallery will both be open and provide the opportunity to purchase gifts and souvenirs from the village.

The Tea Shop continues to provide an excellent choice of refreshments and the Farmers Arms will also be open.

We look forward to seeing you next week.

Literary Institute Update

A few new things in the Muker Literary Institute:

  • Restocked library of second-hand books which are available for a donation towards the upkeep of the building.
  • Each of the photos now has a narrative next to it.  Although the locals will know all the detail it is good for visitors to get some context behind the wonderful historic photos that we have on display.
  • Some colour has been introduced to the room thanks to a donated picture of a classic Muker scene from Occupation Road.
  • Visitor interaction with the weekly list of birds spotted in the area.

More colour photos coming soon courtesy of Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team and local farmers so watch this space.
